EMBRACE: Epidemiological Study of BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutation Carriers

Main Aims

The aims of this study are two-fold:

  • to define a cohort of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers identified throughout the U.K. and Eire, who can be followed prospectively to determine cancer risks and to examine the efficacy of different interventions;
  • to obtain simple epidemiological information, by questionnaire, on affected and unaffected gene carriers, in order to determine lifestyle factors which may modify risk.
  • These data will be collected on a national basis but with the aim of combining them into an international study.
Inclusion Criteria
  • known carriers of a BRCA1/2 mutation  (affected or unaffected)
  • are undergoing, have undergone or may potentially undergo testing for BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations (affected or unaffected).
  • Both males and female are eligible as are women who have had prophylactic bilateral mastectomies or oophorectomies.
Exclusion Criteria
  • under 18 years of age;
  • those who lack mental capacity and would be unable to give informed consent;
  • those who at the local investigators discretion are not thought appropriate e.g. recent family bereavement, late stages of breast cancer, etc.
