Cardiac genetics is the study of how inherited changes in genes can cause disease of the heart and block blood vessels.
The Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine works alongside cardiac services in the region to provide specialist genetic heart clinics. These include dedicated cardiac genetic clinics in Genomic Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital as well as to support the genetic arrhythmia clinic and aortopathy clinics at the Manchester Heart Centre, Manchester Royal Infirmary. The aim of our clinics is to provide information and genetic counselling to allow patients to understand risk to themselves and for family members. Where it is appropriate, our team also provides genetic testing for families and patients with inherited cardiac conditions.
We see individuals and families affected by, or with a family history of, inherited heart conditions or sudden cardiac death. In addition, patients with heart complications which form part of a multi-system genetic condition or syndrome are also seen by the clinical geneticists. Inherited heart conditions may affect both children and adults. A wide range of conditions are covered by the team, including
Cardiac clinics are held on the 6th floor of Saint Mary’s Hospital, as well as in out-reach clinics in Lancaster, Blackpool, Blackburn and Macclesfield. We are happy to see patients who live outside the North West of England who wish to be seen at our centre if referred by their GP or specialist. Patients with Marfan syndrome are usually seen in the general genetics clinics. Adults with Marfan syndrome may be seen in the joint Cardiology/genetic aortopathy clinic held at the Manchester Royal Infirmary by Dr Venetucci, Professor Keavney and Dr Burkitt-Wright.
Referrals for diagnostic assessment should be accompanied by the relevant cardiac investigations, eg copy of ECG, echocardiogram report, cardiac MR report.
Where the referral is for cascade screening/testing of relatives, it is useful to include the details of the affected family member and gene mutation if known.
Our clinics are only able to offer genomic testing for patients within our geographical area in the North West. For patients referred from outside our region, genomic testing will need to be financed from referring doctors within their own geographical area.
Adults who are at risk (or symptomatic) of an inherited arrhythmia condition or have a history of sudden cardiac death may be referred to Professor Clifford Garratt or Dr Venetucci, Consultant Cardiologists, Manchester Heart Centre, Manchester Royal Infirmary, for cardiac investigations or to a local cardiology service for initial family evaluation.
Patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia should instead be referred to Dr Soran’s Hyperlipidaemia clinic at the Manchester Royal Infirmary or, for paediatric patients, to the Willink Metabolic Unit.
