Professor Graeme Black’s work focuses on blindness of children and young adults - which is often genetic in aetiology. Insight into the underlying causes now allows earlier and more precise diagnosis, improving management and raising the possibility of new therapeutic approaches.

Professor Black qualified in medicine from Oxford and then undertook clinical training in Ophthalmology and Medical Genetics. He undertook a DPhil in Oxford studying the genetics of X-linked inherited ophthalmic disease. It was this period that enabled him to develop his combined clinical and research interests. Professor Black is a former Wellcome Trust Clinician Scientist Fellow and Senior Research Fellow and was Director of the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (2009-2012) and Director of the Institute of Human Development (2012-15). He is currently strategic director of MCGM.
