As well as training future specialist genetic and metabolic doctors, genetic counsellors, genetic scientists and bioinformaticians, clinicians and scientists in MCGM deliver teaching and training across a wide range of healthcare professionals both locally, nationally and internationally.
Within the spectrum of medical and nurse training, we teach on courses for undergraduate doctors and nurses, BSc Genetics, postgraduate doctors (FY1 and FY2), SpRs, MSc courses (e.g. clinical rheumatology, oncology, ophthalmology), MRES, MRCP, MRCOG.
We teach on a wide range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses in the UK and overseas. Examples of this include the European School of Genetic Medicine Course in Eye Genetics (held annually in Bertorino, Italy), European Society of Human Genetics workshops, Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (SSIEM) Academy Courses, and European Huntington Disease Network teaching workshops.
We host the two yearly International Manchester Dysmorphology Conference attended by around 200 delegates . The aim of the conference is to bring together those from several disciplines involved in the diagnosis and management of rare syndromic disorders to encourage discussion and foster collaboration. The next conference will be held in November 2018 and as places are limited attendance is conditional on acceptance of an abstract following review by an international scientific committee.
The Developmental Disorders Team host an annual Regional Genetics Forum , held each summer, to bring together clinical geneticists, trainees and other interested professionals to discuss instructive clinical cases and share best practice. This is an ideal forum for trainee presentations and includes an educational “set piece”. Attendance is free of charge but notice of attendance is required.
Our experts are also invited to teach and run full courses including:
The Manchester Dysmorphology Course, ESHG workshops (hereditary cancer, medical genetics, ophthlamic genetics), Christie Cancer care course, bowel cancer study days, Cardiac genetics course, SSIEM Academy courses (biochemical genetics), EHDN workshops, Genetic Dermatology meetings, Genomic practice for Genetic Counsellors.
We are also active in supporting education in patient support groups including the HD Youth Organisation (HDYO), Cardiomyopathy UK, TS Association, RP Fightingblindness, William syndrome Foundation and many others.
Finally, we run open days and attend public events, engage with young scientists in Healthcare Science Week and engage with schools and STEMnet events.
