Timely emergency management is crucial in the treatment of many metabolic disorders.Advice can be obtained at any time from the consultant on call via the secretaries in working hours on 0161 701 2137 and out of hours via the hospital switchboard on 0161 276 1234.

The Willink Metabolic Unit is the main centre in the North West of England for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with all forms of paediatric inherited metabolic disorders and is internationally renowned. The service comprises of a specialist laboratory and clinical team, with this close integration facilitating a comprehensive specialist service.
Outpatient clinics are held on theĀ 6th Floor of St Mary’s HospitalĀ in the Department of Genomic Medicine on a daily basis. We also provide regular outreach clinics to Bradford St Luke’s Hospital, Liverpool Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Airedale Hospital and Newcastle Royal Victoria Hospital.
Patients whose treatment involves specialist dietetic management are seen in joint dietetic/consultant clinics.
Patients with other metabolic disorders will often be seen together with a specialist nurse, especially those attending with lysosomal disorders.
We hold a number of multidisciplinary clinics with other specialities within the Trust. These clinics allow a multidisciplinary approach to the often complex diagnosis and management of metabolic disorders.

Patients with metabolic disorders requiring inpatient care are admitted to various wards at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and are seen by the metabolic team on a daily basis.
We provide advice and support to local clinical teams throughout the North of England for hospital treatment of patients with suspected or confirmed metabolic disorders.
The Willink Metabolic Unit is an internationally renowned centre for the diagnosis and treatment of lysosomal storage disorders (LSD) and both the laboratory and clinical services are commissioned nationally. Our international reputation attracts patients from overseas as well as all parts of the UK and the laboratory receives samples for testing for lysosomal storage disorders from across the world.

Adults affected with genetic metabolic disorders are seen by metabolic specialists at Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In order to facilitate the smooth transfer of young adults from paediatric to adult care, special transition clinics are held on a monthly basis at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
The joint paediatric-adult clinic is attended by members of the Salford team, comprising of a metabolic consultant physician, a specialist nurse and specialist dietitian along with the paediatric metabolic team. Typically patients will attend the transition clinics on two or three occasions before being transferred to adult care.
