When you arrive at the genetics department, your details will be taken by our reception staff. You will be asked to wait in the waiting room. There is a play area for children. Metabolic appointments are with one of the paediatric metabolic consultants and, depending upon your child’s condition, a dietician or a nurse specialist may also be present. Everybody you meet in clinic will introduce themselves, but if you are unclear, please feel free to ask. A first appointment lasts 30 – 60 minutes with follow-up appointments being shorter at 20-30 minutes. After the face-to-face meeting your child may require blood or urine tests which will be done in the department by our staff who are specifically trained in taking blood from all ages of children.
If you need an interpreter, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can arrange this for you.
It can helpful to bring as much information as you can about the family, particularly about family members with a similar condition.
